An initiative of the nonprofit organization GP RED (Research, Education, and Development), Safe Routes To Play has the following objectives:
1. To develop a community assessment tool for recreation & parks professionals, transportation planners, and communities to determine the level of 'active access' children have to play spaces in their communities
2. To generate a funding mechanism for communities to implement Safe Routes To Play initiatives, including separated pathways in and around parks, natural areas and playgrounds, involving children in the community's active travel and non-motorized transportation planning process, creating and distributing Safe Routes To Play maps, and coordinating active travel programming
3. To promote awareness of the importance of developing the built enfironment based on a child-centered, active transportation model
4. To develop Safe Routes to Play as a nationally accepted practice in community trails, transportation, recreation facility and park planning initiatives.
5. To develop appropriate national and international partnerships and resource sharing with government, academic, nonprofit, and business entities to further Safe Routes To Play objectives
